Harley Davidson Exhaust Popping
Expert Gear Advice From Riders.
Harley davidson exhaust popping. Exhaust leaks can cause decel pop make sure the exhaust is sealed completely at the motor and at any other connections. Generally speaking it may be caused by a an exhaust manifold leak. During backfires unburnt fuel goes out through the exhaust valve on deceleration.
It is also necessary that the exhaust system have rather open mufflers. Ever since Cobra introduced the 909 slip ons they have been getting requests for a version that aligns perfectly with the bags. Cobra 909 Uppercut Slip On Harley Davidson Exhaust.
In fact one should expect a well-tuned high performance engine to pop and crackle when the throttle is closed at high rpm. The popping is a result of the airfuel mixture becoming very lean when the throttle is closed and the engine is rotating well above idle speed. If your spitting popping and having trouble keeping the engine turning at idle you most likely have a slip of the gasket on your t-pipe that connects the carb to the engine.

The engine backfire on deceleration is also caused by the too lean airfuel ratio - A lot of people think that the backfirepopping in the exhaust is caused by too rich mixture but its actually the other way round. Popping is basically caused by a leak in the exhaust system possibly at the head pipe or at a joint in the system that draws in air.
The popping is caused by unspent gas building up in the cylinder or within the exhaust header on decel and then finally the heat or spark will set it off. I kind of like the sound on my bike even though it is muffled a bit. A fuel pak may help to rid of some of the popping but I would first check for any leaks in the system usually the main culprit.
Ways to reduce and possibly eliminate this popping are listed below and can vary between Harley-Davidson motorcycles and others. When the Harley is backfiring with the stock exhaust system still intact it might signal the exhaust pipe weakening or the muffler is malfunctioning. When any unburnt fuel exits the cylinder like on decel the air that can leak into the system will cause the mixture in the system to ignite causing a pop.
